Rome has one of the most inhumane carriage horse trades – horses work long hours mostly on cobble stone streets and in very hot temperatures. In the last few years, two horses were killed while pulling carriages. The most recent was Birillo, a young horse who was struck down by a truck and left dying for three hours waiting for veterinary help.
An online poll in La Repubblica in November, 2008, resulted in 73% of respondents voting to ban the industry. This was very similar to the results from a NYC TV poll in November, 2007. The people clearly want to see this inhumanity end.
Please send an e-mail to these two addresses saying that you will not travel to Rome until this inhumane and unsafe trade is banned from the city.
Put these words in the subject line: turisti contro il botticelle (translates to “Tourists against carriage horse trade”)
